Italy 4th day

Vatican City across the Tiber River
Memorial Hall of Emmanuel II

I got up at 6:30 today. In Japan, Governor Tanaka seemed to be defeated in the Nagano prefectural governor's election. Kyoto seemed to be a sweltering summer heat of over 36 degrees Celsius every day, but Italy was comfortable (rather cold).
Today We went to Rome for a nostalgic trip. Looking at St. Peter's Basilica, Piazza Venezia and Roman Forum from the bus, I felt completely Roman.

Colosseum appearance

 Colosseum
It's a super-large four-story arena, it's huge! A cosplayer dressed as a gladiator was walking around. I had never seen this before. We took a picture in front of the Arc de Triomphe of Emperor Constantinus, avoiding the intense sunlight. This gate is made by collecting sculptures from all over the place due to lack of craftsmen, and it seems that the original one is few.

Mouth of truth
Waiting line for shooting

 Mouth of truth
This was also my first visit in 30 years. The church was under construction, but the mouth of truth was very popular and there was a long line from the entrance. The rule was that the next person in the line would press the shutter. It seemed that this tour will not go sightseeing to Mouth of Truth from October, so this trip seemed to be the last chance.

Pantheon appearance

 Pantheon
It was a mysterious space. The cavity at the top is 9m in diameter, but it didn't seem that big (it means that the internal space is so large). It seems that it escaped destruction under the pretext of using it as a church, but from the symbolic spatiality, the temple is more suitable. The tomb of Raphael, who was active in paintings at the Vatican Museums, is also here.

Bandman in Piazza Navona

 Piazza Navona
One of the busiest squares in Rome with bands and performers. In the center of Rome, the apartments around the square are the most expensive in Rome.

Plaza España (from the top of the stairs)

 Spain Square
It was a pity that the obelisk was under construction. It was also full of people and hot here. Was it used as a meeting place? (Actually, it was more crowded at night)

Trevi Fountain

 Trevi Fountain
It was dangerous to take out wallet when throwing coins, so we prepared some coins before heading to the fountain.
I was careful about pickpockets while I was taking pictures because of the heavy congestion. The scale was so big that I couldn't take the whole picture even with a super wide-angle lens.

View from the cupola of St. Peter's Basilica

After the tour, we got a taxi at the hotel and headed to St. Peter's Basilica. I scrached ProTrek (watch) with the guard stone in the square in front of St. Peter's Basilica. It was the first memorable wound. We took the elevator to the bottom of the cupola. From there, we could see the floor of St. Peter's Basilica and it was a great scale.
At first we climbed the cupola diagonally, then a curved staircase, and finally a narrow spiral staircase that one person could barely pass through. The number of steps is 320, and my legs were quite tired. Finally, we came to the top of the cupola. The wind that hits my face was comfortable. We enjoyed a 360-degree view of Rome and the Vatican.
We got off the cupola and went sightseeing in the cathedral. The Swiss mercenaries uniform was very colorful.

St. Peter's Basilica in the evening
Dinner at Restaurant Olympus

For dinner, we took a taxi to the restaurant Olympus on the roof of Hotel Bernini Bristol in Piazza Barberini. When we were sitting in the indoor seats because the Baths of Caracalla last night was cold, the female manager strongly recommended that the outside seats be the best, and we moved to the garden terrace. The cupola of San Pietro protrudes high from the city. We enjoyed dinner while looking out at the city of Rome in the evening. The scenery that changed into a night view was wonderful.
We had a slow dinner at the garden seat until around 22:50 with pasta and main (beef) dishes I chose red wine from the Roman region. Perhaps because of the vacation season, there weren't many waiters and I couldn't get wine right away. (This was the same in Milan, was it the same everywhere at this time of year?) The wind on the garden terrace felt cold. Like yesterday's opera, I thought Italians had a different sense of cold.
Late at night and tired, I decided to take a rest tonight, deciding to postpone the illuminated city walk and Giolitti's gelato to the next opportunity (Is there really the next opportunity?).
